Guitar Hero

So lately I've been getting away from work for a few hours and learning to play guitar. I had always admired those who could play, and wanted to learn. When I was in high school my family did not have the budget for a guitar, even a cheap one, but a friend of mine lent me his Fender and his amp for a few days to try out. I really enjoyed it, and even learned to play a few chords. But since I didn't have a guitar of my own and my family didn't have the budget for one I never got into playing.

Some years later I decided that I was going to pick up a guitar and learn. I bought an acoustic guitar and set out to teach myself to play. I started out reading books, and getting CDs, but soon I was too busy at work to learn to play. It seems that there is always an obstacle in life. There is always something there to challenge you. Now that I had the money, and a guitar, I didn't have the time. So I put the guitar in a closet, and it collected dust for years.

So where the hell am I going with this story? I don't know, it's a blog, a random stream of thoughts, but stay with me, there might be a golden nugget of information in here.

My son had a number of toys, but one of the ones he loved the most was a small toy guitar. Over the years, I've bought him a few of them (He's like Kurt Cobain in training the way he wrecks them). I have also been playing a lot of RockBand/Guitar Hero and my son loves to play along too. I kept seeing how much he was enjoying his guitar and playing RockBand/Guitar Hero and it inspired me. I dusted off the old guitar and decided I was going to play it. A couple of chords later, I decided that I was going to go out and get a Fender. I bought an cheapo Starcaster on Amazon in case I found some excuse not to go all the way this time.

This time however, is different. I'm actually learning and I'm taking lessons too. Now I'm becoming semi-obsessed with everything guitars. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it makes me step away from the office and the glow of my monitor more often, so it can't be that bad. Plus now I can teach my son too.

So I guess the point is you can teach an old dog new tricks, and you don't have to give up on dreams. You can always go back and start over. See I knew I could work in some kind of moral there... Anyway, if you're into playing guitar, or thinking about it, make sure to check out Ultimate Guitar, JamPlay, and of course YouTube
